Fall Bulbs Planting Tips

What are fall Bulbs?

Fall bulbs are spring-flowering bulbs that need to be planted in the fall to establish roots during the cooler months. This cold period (vernalization) is necessary for them to trigger blooming and produce flowers in the following spring.

When to Plant

Planting Time: Typically, you should plant fall bulbs when the soil temperature consistently drops to 60F or below, ensuring it's done before the ground freezes. This gives the bulbs the necessary time to develop roots over the winter.

When They Flower

Bloom Time: These bulbs flower in the spring—you can get blooms in the early, middle, or late spring, depending on the specific variety you choose. To keep color going all season, many gardeners plant a mix of early, mid, and late bloomers.

How to Plant

Planting Depth: Generally, bury the bulb at a depth that is two to three times its height or diameter, making sure the pointy end is facing up.

Soil Needs

Soil: Ensure the planting site has well-drained soil. This is crucial to stop the bulbs from sitting in moisture and rotting.
