Water Wisely: Simple Summer Tips for Healthier Plants
As temperatures rise, your garden needs steady, thoughtful watering to stay healthy and strong. A few smart habits can help your plants handle hot days, dry spells, and changing summer conditions with less stress.
-
Water deeply, but less often. Instead of giving plants a quick sprinkle every day, water deeply so moisture reaches the root zone. This encourages roots to grow farther down into the soil, helping plants become more resilient during dry periods. A good goal is about one inch of water per week, whether it comes from rainfall or irrigation.
-
Make mornings your watering window. Early morning is one of the best times to water. Plants have time to absorb moisture before the heat of the day, and foliage can dry before evening, which helps reduce the risk of fungal disease.
-
Give container plants extra attention. Potted plants dry out much faster than plants in the ground, especially during warm or windy weather. Check containers daily, and during heatwaves, be ready to water once or even twice a day if needed.
-
Add mulch to lock in moisture. A 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch helps keep soil cooler, reduces evaporation, and suppresses weeds that compete for water. If you need mulch, stop by—we have it ready for your garden beds and containers.
